Aluminum Slide Rails for Filing Cabinets
Why Aluminum for Filing
Office filing cabinets benefit from aluminum slide rails for three convergent reasons: weight (filing cabinets are shipped globally - every gram matters for logistics cost), corrosion (offices are climate-controlled but filing cabinets are also used in non-climate-controlled archives and record storage), and aesthetics (modern open-plan offices expose cabinet interiors - aluminum's natural finish looks cleaner than zinc-plated steel).
The economics are compelling: a 4-drawer lateral file cabinet uses 8 slides. Switching from steel (180 g/slide) to aluminum (65 g/slide) saves 920 g per cabinet. At container-level shipping (600+ cabinets per 40ft container), this saves approximately 550 kg per container - equivalent to fitting 3 additional cabinets. For manufacturers shipping 10,000+ cabinets/year internationally, this translates to $15,000-30,000 annual freight savings - far exceeding the per-unit slide cost increase of ~15%.
BWD 6063-T5 aluminum slides rated to 50-75 lb per pair cover the full range of letter/legal file drawers at standard fill density.

Detailed Selection Notes
Aluminum slide specification for filing cabinets:
Load validation: Letter-size file drawer fully loaded = approximately 25-35 lb (11-16 kg). Legal-size = 30-45 lb (14-20 kg). BWD 50 lb aluminum slides provide adequate margin for letter; 75 lb for legal or mixed. Never use aluminum above 100 lb - transition to steel.
Rail width: BWD aluminum slides use 27 mm rail (vs 45 mm for steel full-extension). This narrow profile actually benefits filing cabinets by maximizing interior filing width. A 4-drawer lateral file gains 36 mm of interior width (4 slides x 9 mm reduction per side).
Finish options: Clear anodize (natural silver) = standard, lowest cost. Black anodize = premium appearance, matches dark cabinet interiors. Note: anodized aluminum cannot be painted with standard powder coat (poor adhesion) - if customer needs color match, specify from available anodize colors rather than over-painting.
Anti-tip interlock: ANSI/BIFMA X5.9 requires anti-tip for cabinets >3 drawers. BWD aluminum series is compatible with our standard interlock mechanism - same kit as steel slides.
Noise: Aluminum-on-aluminum bearing surfaces can generate slightly higher noise than steel ball bearings. BWD uses polymer ball retainers (not metal cages) in aluminum slides, reducing noise to <32 dB(A) - acceptable for open-plan offices.
